What is Personal Protective Equipment?

Personal Protective Equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses.

These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards.

OSHA has published a helpful “OSHA PPE Fact Sheet”

I encourage you to download yours as a handy reference on this topic.

What can be done to ensure proper use of personal protective equipment?

All personal protective equipment should be safely designed and constructed and should be readily available to all employees.  It should fit comfortably, encouraging worker use. If the personal protective equipment does not fit properly, it can make the difference between being safely covered or dangerously exposed.

To ensure that PPE is being properly used, PPE training needs to be implemented so each worker knows about the proper use of personal protective equipment.

PPE Training should include:

  • When it is necessary
  • What kind is necessary
  • How to properly put it on, adjust, wear and take it off
  • Limitations of the equipment
  • Proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of the equipment

PPE use should be outlined in your local Health and Safety Plan and/or policy.

Health and Safety Plans and/or Policies should address:

  • Hazards present,
  • Types and selection of PPE,
  • Maintenance of PPE,
  • Proper use of PPE.

PPE Training routinely completed for employees and monitoring of the program will ongoing effectiveness.
