The Chancellors Budget on the Waste Industry

The Chancellors Budget saw the personal allowance increased to £10,000, the price of a pint of beer drop by 1p and new housing schemes designed to boost the housing market. Behind the headlines, how was waste and recycling industry affected by the Chancellors budget?

The Chancellor confirmed that the rate of Landfill Tax will increase to £72 per tonne from the 1st April 2013. From the 1st of April 2014, the Landfill Tax will further increase by £8 per tonne to £80 per tonne. However, the lower rate Landfill Tax will remain at £2.50 per tonne in 2014/15.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs budget will stay at £1.9 billion in 2013/14, but will be reduced to £1.7 billion in 2014/15. The Department of Energy and Climate Change will also see departmental cuts in its budget in 2013/14 and 2014/15.

The Chancellor announced that the Landfill Communities Fund scheme will remain unchanged at £78.1 million for 2013/14.

The Chief executive of the Chartered Instiution of Wastes Management (CIWM), Steve Lee, has described the budget for the waste and resource management sector as 'little news, good or otherwise', which nicely sums the impact the budget has had on the industry.
