A ‘breaking ground’ ceremony was held last week at Tradebe Inutec’s Winfrith site and marks the beginning of the groundworks and construction phase for its new development at Winfrith and moves the provision of a flexible new treatment facility a step closer.

Once completed the 700m2 building will be the first new permanent facility to be constructed on the Winfrith site for 20 years and is another significant investment on the site that follows Tradebe Inutec becoming a nuclear site licensee in early 2019.

The Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, Tom Greatrex, and Tradebe Inutec’s Managing Director, Brian Mulholland led the ceremony that kick started the project, which is due to be commissioned in summer 2020.

Brian Mulholland said “I’m delighted to get this important project running.  When complete, it will give our clients additional options for cost-effective, offsite treatment of their LLW and borderline ILW waste.  It’s another demonstration of our commitment to support the UK’s decommissioning mission.”

Tom Greatrex added, “It is great to be witness to a moment that I know will put in motion very real and direct benefits to nearby communities. This kind of investment brings prosperity, building on the 60,000 jobs the sector already employs here in the UK. It serves as another reminder that we are innovators in advanced manufacturing and decommissioning. I look forward to the subsequent steps we will see at Tradebe Inutec’s Winfrith site.”
